Abstract | Links | BibTeX | وسوم: Disaster Management, Emergency Management @article{Kurdi2021, Purpose –The Arab world is made up of 22 countries in the Middle East and North Africa. These countries are subjected to many social, economic, political and geographical vulnerabilities contributing to increased risks or ineffective emergency and disaster management. This paper examines these vulnerabilities, how they may impact the country’s ability to face disasters, and how they can improve disasters’ overall management. Design/methodology/approach – The author selected Qatar, Oman to represent the Arab oil-rich countries, while Jordan, Egypt and Morocco to represent non-oil rich countries. The research was conducted in a qualitative, inductive systematic literature review based on a well-established systematic literature review methodology. Selected literature was based on its recency and the countries in question. Findings – The review reveals population gaps that could threaten the social system in the event of a disaster in countries like Qatar and Oman. The majority of the countries lack community engagement and pre-planning for emergency preparedness due to social and cultural barriers. Other nations like Jordan, Egypt and Morocco are prone to long-lasting economic challenges due to lack of resources, mismanagement or corruption. The paper also highlights the need to raise the educational attainment among citizens to understand disaster risk reduction. Originality/value – This study utilized the research method developed by Williams et al. (2017) to present a comprehensive systematic and comparative review of disaster management in the Arab world. Considering that disaster and emergency management has remained disproportionately unexplored in the Arab world, this paper reviewed several vulnerabilities and how those vulnerabilities may affect disaster and emergency management efforts in the Arab countries. 2. | Al-Kurdi, Osama F; El-Haddadeh, Ramzi; Eldabi, Tillal The role of organisational climate in managing knowledge sharing among academics in higher education Journal Article In: International Journal of Information Management, vol. 50, no. 217-227, 2020. Abstract | Links | BibTeX | وسوم: Academia, Higher Education, Information Management, knowledge management, Knowledge Sharing, Management, University @article{Al-Kurdi2020, Organizations have often implemented Knowledge Management programs to connect employees better and promote knowledge sharing (KS). In the context of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), this is particularly valid as knowledge creation and dissemination direct their mission and vision. Academics are one of the pillars of HEIs, where knowledge is created and shared. Nonetheless, as HEIs strive to promote academics’ knowledge sharing culture, the actual behaviour of academics might remain inhibited by numerous issues, namely the organizational. Prior research has been focused primarily on individual, technological and scarce aspects of organizational elements. Therefore, this study assesses the role of organizational climate operationalized by organizational leadership and trust in academics’ KS in HEIs. Partial Least Square (PLS) method where variance-based Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was applied in this study. Results from 257 surveyed academics indicate that organizational climate has an exceptionally strong influence on academics’ KS practices. Additionally, organizational leadership and trust had a positive relationship with academics’ KS behaviour. These findings indicate that it is necessary to consider organizational elements and their interactions when understanding and fostering academics’ knowledge sharing behaviour in HEIs context

4. | Al-Kurdi, Osama F Knowledge-sharing management in the context of higher education institutions PhD Thesis 2017. Abstract | BibTeX | وسوم: Academia, Higher Education, Information Management, knowledge management @phdthesis{Al-Kurdi2017, Competitive advantage does not depend solely on the creation and storage of existing and new knowledge. Rather, it requires sustained exploitation and production. The challenge becomes driven towards maintaining some mechanisms to help in producing new, and sharing existing knowledge. Harnessing the power of managing and sharing knowledge enabled companies like Apple and IBM to gain competitive advantage over their competitors. While such challenges have been closely examined in the extant literature, the context of knowledge management and sharing in higher education institutions (HEI) has only been lightly considered. However, considering the highly unique features of HEIs context in terms of autonomy, climate, distinct leadership and role of academics as knowledge workers, it can be argued that examining knowledge-sharing in the context of higher education is greatly needed. The literature has shown fragmented nature of examining academics’ KS determinants in contemporary research. Thus, the need to comprehensively examine those influencers is essential. This thesis seeks to address the research gaps and contribute to the literature by asking What antecedents influence the process of knowledge-sharing (KS) between academics in HEIs, and how can the process of KS in HEIs be improved? Through the use of a quantitative research methodology, the research has developed eleven hypotheses to investigate the above-mentioned question. The findings in this study revealed to a very great extent that academics themselves can contribute towards influencing knowledge production and management

Abstract | Links | BibTeX | وسوم: Higher Education, knowledge management, Knowledge Sharing @inbook{AlKurdi2015, This paper reviews and analyses the literature on knowledge sharing in a university setting with the aim of identifying and understanding the determinants of knowledge sharing culture, research trends, theories, and future research opportunities for knowledge sharing in higher education institutions (HEIs). Findings suggest that there is disproportionately little knowledge sharing research in HEIs compared to the commercial sector. The review reveals that existing research on HEIs does not consider the determinants of knowledge sharing culture in a comprehensive manner. Research on knowledge sharing in commercial and HEIs in developing economies like Africa, the Middle East and South America is found to be limited. The review shows that future research should consider cultural and behavioural factors at different levels, that is, individual, national, professional teams, language issues and trust that might impact knowledge sharing practices among faculty members in HEIs in developing economies.

Abstract | BibTeX | وسوم: Information Management, Knowledge Sharing @conference{Al-Kurdi2014, Knowledge Sharing is considered to be a key element of knowledge management processes and a success factor for KM programs. In a university setting, a lack of sharing knowledge could be alarming since universities are considered as knowledge intensive organisation, and this would impact research output and teaching activities. The purpose of this paper is to analyse and review the existing literature with the aim to identify and understand the determinants of knowledge sharing culture, research trends, theories, and future research opportunities for knowledge sharing in Higher Education Institutions. Peer reviewed articles and conference papers in recognized and academic journals and conferences were selected for the review utilizing the ProQuest database. Findings suggest that there is disproportionately little knowledge sharing research in HEI compared to the commercial sector. The review revealed that existing research on HEIs does not consider the determinants of knowledge sharing culture in a comprehensive manner. Research on knowledge sharing in commercial and HEI in developing economies like Africa, the Middle East and South America was found to be limited. Future research should therefore consider cultural and behavioural factors at different levels, ie individual, national, professional teams, language issues and trust that might impact knowledge sharing practices among faculty members in HEI in developing economies |
