As an educator who graduated from a traditional university setting, I experienced firsthand the limitations of the traditional exam and quiz-based assessment methods. While these assessments are important, they don’t always accurately reflect a student’s understanding and abilities, especially in a diverse and complex world where skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving are in high demand.
That’s why I strongly advocate for a more student-centered and diversified approach to assessments in universities. By incorporating a range of methods, such as team projects, hands-on projects, practical assignments and assessments of soft skills, students can apply their knowledge and showcase their abilities in a meaningful way. These assessments also help to foster the development of important practical skills, which are crucial for success in the workforce.
Additionally, involving students in the design of assessments and evaluations can increase their engagement and motivation and help to create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment. This can be achieved through the use of student feedback and participation in the evaluation process, as well as providing opportunities for students to work in teams and collaborate on projects.
As a result of these experiences, I’ve made it a priority in my own teaching to incorporate a range of assessment methods in my classes. I’ve seen the positive impact it can have on my students, from increased engagement and motivation to better preparation for the challenges they will face in their future careers.
